Body of 5-Year-Old Girl Swept Into Ocean in Laguna Beach Found Near Christmas Cove
Authorities searched more than 90 square miles before the child was found and identified, ending a 30-hour operation, officials said.
On Thursday, June 11, search teams recovered the body of 5-year-old Amada Mia Brown near Christmas Cove, about a quarter-mile north of Treasure Island Beach in Laguna Beach, ending a multi-day rescue operation.
Amada and her family were walking Tuesday when a 9-foot rogue wave swept them into the ocean; bystanders rescued the mother and sibling, but Amada could not be reached, Laguna Beach Marine Safety Chief Kai Bonds said.
Rescue teams covered more than 90 square miles over 30 hours, utilizing boats, divers, and aircraft in coordination with local agencies, Capt. Stacey Crecy of Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach said.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department Coroner Division positively identified the body as Amada's, while Laguna Beach Mayor Mark Orgill said, "This is one of the most heartbreaking incidents I have witnessed during my time serving this community."
Dangerous rip currents and high surf prompted a High Surf Advisory for Southern California beaches through Thursday, though the National Weather Service expects surf conditions to improve Friday as wave heights diminish.
