Search Called Off for Missing Boy, 11, After Body Discovered

Emergency crews searched for 48 hours as the family was informed and formal identification is still to come, police said.

  • On Tuesday, South Yorkshire Police confirmed they recovered the body of 11-year-old Mackenzie Swift after a 48-hour search in the River Don near Mexborough ended shortly before 23:00 on Monday.
  • After the boy entered the water near Ferry Boat Lane in Mexborough at about 20:00 BST on Saturday, emergency crews launched an extensive search involving Woodhead Mountain Rescue and an underwater team.
  • Chief Superintendent Pete Thorp, district commander for Doncaster, said he sent "deepest sympathies to his family and friends" and thanked the community for enabling recovery operations "with very few onlookers and cameras."
  • Mackenzie is the 16th person in the UK known to have died in open water during the recent heatwave; the total death toll now stands at 17 following a 13-year-old girl's death at the River Wharfe on Sunday.
  • Met Office meteorologist Rebecca Mitchell said the heatwave is "over" with "big change on the way," including cooler temperatures, rain, possible thunderstorms, and strengthening winds expected across the region.
