Seal escapes orca hunt by jumping onto photographer’s boat
- On Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, Charvet Drucker captured dramatic photos and video of a harbor seal that clambered onto the stern's swimming platform of her rented 20-foot boat about 40 miles northwest of Seattle to escape a pod of at least eight killer whales.
- Bigg's orcas, known to hunt seals and varied prey, used coordinated movements and tail slaps and appeared to team up to rock the boat.
- Using a zoom lens, Charvet Drucker filmed as her whale-watching group cut the engine per wildlife-boating regulations; the harbor seal slid off the boat at least once but climbed back on, and the orcas swam away after about 15 minutes.
- On Thursday, Drucker said, `I'm definitely Team Orca, all day, every day,` but noted she `kind of turned` Team Seal when the seal climbed on the boat and said `You poor thing.`
- NOAA says the wave-washing technique has been documented since the 1980s and notes Bigg's orcas are generally better fed than salmon-focused resident orcas, which are endangered.
