Scottish Greens Win Glasgow Seat Vacated by Nicola Sturgeon
Holly Bruce won by 11,174 to 9,003 as the Greens took Nicola Sturgeon’s former seat and claimed a second constituency victory.
On Friday, Scottish Green Party candidate Holly Bruce secured a historic victory in Glasgow Southside, defeating Scottish Government Equalities Minister Kaukab Stewart with 14,048 votes to 10,947.
Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon faced a final humiliation as her Glasgow Southside seat turned Green immediately upon her departure from the Scottish Parliament after facing criticism for being a 'part-time MSP'.
Lorna Slater also claimed victory in Edinburgh Central, defeating SNP minister Angus Robertson, and credited the result to decades of work by Scottish Greens members and councillors.
Bruce denied her success resulted from a 'backlash' against Sturgeon, instead declaring the victory proved the Scottish Greens are no longer a 'wasted constituency vote.'
According to Slater, solidarity with Palestine influenced voters in student-heavy Edinburgh Central, as the party hopes these results will secure their largest group of MSPs in the Scottish Parliament.
