- A study led by Lucas Mavromatis at NYU's Grossman School of Medicine found that GLP-1 drugs lowered obesity-related cancer risk in adults with diabetes.
- Researchers analyzed 170,000 patient records and compared those who took GLP-1 receptor agonists to those who took other diabetes drugs not linked to weight loss.
- After four years, the GLP-1 group had a 7% lower risk of obesity-related cancers and 2,501 new cancer cases versus 2,671 in the comparison group, with effects seen mainly in women.
- Dr. Ernest Hawk, not involved in the study, called for more research to confirm these findings, noting this study cannot establish cause and effect but suggests a connection worth exploring.
- The study, supported by the NIH and shared at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, suggests that widely used weight-loss medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic may help reduce the risk of certain obesity-related cancers.
