Scammers stealing new phones Cowichan RCMP warn
RCMP say scammers pose as providers and trick recent buyers into mailing back phones, leaving victims without a device or replacement.
- North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP issued a warning about a scam targeting individuals who recently received new cell phones through legitimate wireless providers. Perpetrators trick victims into surrendering their devices.
- Scammers contact victims claiming to represent their service provider and assert the wrong phone was shipped. They then instruct victims to return the device using a prepaid shipping label sent by email.
- Victims ship their devices, only to discover packages delivered to unauthorized addresses rather than service providers. They never receive the promised replacement and permanently lose their original phone.
- "Contact your service provider directly using a verified phone number," Const. Tessa McDonald of North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP advised. She warned that scammers often possess convincing, legitimate-seeming information.
- Residents should confirm shipping and return addresses independently before providing personal data. Anyone targeted should report the incident to their service provider and local police immediately.
