Ukrainian Drones Hit 2 Russian Su-27 Jets in Crimea, Intelligence Agency Says
The Security Service of Ukraine destroyed two $70 million Russian Su-27 jets and struck the control tower at Belbek airfield to weaken Russian military capabilities, the SBU said.
- On Dec. 20, the Security Service of Ukraine said its Special Operations Center `A` operated long-range drones that struck two Russian Su-27 fighter jets at the Belbek military airfield.
- Following an earlier strike on Dec. 18, the SBU said this was the second success in days after drones hit two Nebo‑SVU radars, a 92N6 radar from the S‑400 Triumph system, a Pantsir‑S2 and a MiG‑31 with full ammunition.
- A WarImage circulating purports to show a strike on a Su-27, and the SBU wrote one Su-27 was destroyed on a taxiway with a full combat load ready for combat.
- The SBU estimated the two aircraft cost about $70 million and said damage to the airfield control tower `may complicate the organization and control of flights` at Belbek.
- The SBU framed the strikes as weakening Russian capacity at Belbek military airfield, saying they `significantly reduce the enemy's military potential in the region` and `This systematic work will continue`.
