California Faces Rare Tropical Storm Threat as Rachel Approaches
On Friday, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm watch for San Diego County as Tropical Storm Rachel approaches, expected to bring heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding through the weekend.
Record-Warm ocean waters and strong El Niño conditions are fueling the storm, with weather expert Daniel Swain noting these temperatures provide "fuel" for Rachel as it nears the California-Mexico border.
Forecasters expect tropical storm-force winds of at least 34 mph and waves up to 10 feet, as meteorologist Miguel Miller explained that high tides, elevated sea levels, and a separate approaching storm are compounding local flood risks.
Stormwater Department Director Todd Snyder urged residents to prepare, stating, "By taking a few simple steps now, residents can significantly reduce the potential impacts of the storm." City crews are cleaning storm drains and staging equipment.
Hurricane Simon could bring additional rainfall to the Southwest early next week, though uncertainty remains regarding its trajectory; the National Hurricane Center warns swells from these systems will cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.
