  • On Tuesday, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal announced an international cruise terminal in Puri at an estimated cost of Rs 1,500 crore, to be developed by the Paradip Port Authority with the Odisha government.
  • The government aims to double coastal and inland waterway freight from 6% to 12% by 2047 and attract 1 million sea cruise passengers by 2029 through the Coastal Cargo Promotion Scheme and Cruise Bharat Mission.
  • These initiatives are expected to generate more than 560,000 jobs and save 16 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions, Sonowal said.
  • Sonowal also detailed National Waterway-5 in Odisha, estimated at more than Rs 13,000 crore, to connect industrial and mining centers including Talcher and Kalinganagar with eastern ports.
  • Coastal cargo handled at Indian ports has increased from 74 million metric tonnes to 177 million metric tonnes over the past 12 years, registering growth of around 140 per cent, during a consultative committee meeting that included Minister of State for MoPSW Shantanu Thakur and eight members of Parliament.
