Heal the Bay Shares Cleanest and Most Polluted Beaches in SoCal, Santa Monica Pier Among the Worst
Santa Monica Pier named one of California's dirtiest beaches for the 10th consecutive year, with bacteria levels reaching 20 times safety thresholds, the report states.
On Wednesday, Heal the Bay released its annual Beach Report Card, ranking the Santa Monica Pier second on its 'Beach Bummer' list for the 10th consecutive year due to elevated bacteria levels and chronic pollution.
California beaches overall maintained strong water quality with 91% earning A or B grades during dry conditions, though statewide wet-weather grades declined from 67% to 61% due to rainfall and aging infrastructure.
Since 2020, bacteria levels at the pier have surged with monthly averages reaching up to 20 times safety thresholds, which Heal the Bay CEO Tracy Quinn called a "public health issue."
A newly formed task force comprising scientists and officials has begun analyzing 20 years of data to determine pollution sources and identify potential mitigation solutions for the pier.
Only 21 beaches earned a spot on the 'Honor Roll' this year, a decrease from 62 last year that researchers attribute to higher-than-average seasonal rainfall across Southern California.
