San Jose high school trainer arrested for sexual battery, recording assault of teen
Police say Kelvin Chiu, 31, was booked on sexual battery and child sexual abuse material charges after officers found evidence on his phone.
On Friday, Oct. 9, police arrested Kelvin Chiu, 31, in Fremont on suspicion of sexually battering a 16-year-old student at Archbishop Mitty High School. Authorities allege he recorded the assault while providing care for her sports-related injury.
Detectives with the San Jose Police Department Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force obtained search warrants for Chiu's home and vehicles. Child sexual abuse material was discovered on his phone during the investigation.
The Catholic Diocese of San Jose confirmed Chiu was an athletic trainer employed since May 2025 and placed him on administrative leave immediately. Cynthia Shaw, director of communications, said the school's counseling teams are available to support affected students.
Due to Chiu's position of trust, police believe there may be additional victims. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact Detective Camarillo or Detective Widmer of the Child Exploitation Detail Task Force.
The Diocese encourages individuals to report improper conduct through a secure online server or 24-hour hotline at 844-372-1691. Officials emphasize that all reports remain confidential to protect the rights of potential victim-survivors.
