Samsung’s New Robotics Division Appoints Former Boston Dynamics Lead

Samsung said the new unit will oversee robotics strategy and core technology as it expands research hubs in the United States, China and Japan.

  • On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, Samsung Electronics established the "Robotics eXperience" Business Office reporting directly to CEO Roh Tae-moon to accelerate humanoid robotics development and commercialization.
  • To bolster this initiative, Samsung appointed Lee Dong-kun, former Hyundai Motor Group robotics strategy lead, to head the Robotics Strategy Team while planning a 19 trillion won investment in Gumi.
  • Based at the Seoul R&D Campus, the unit includes Seoul National University professor Kim Hyoun-jin and Ajou University professor Kim Ui-kyum, while establishing a Data Factory in North Gyeongsang Province and research hubs in the United States, China, and Japan.
  • Samsung shares rose 6.76% following the announcement as the conglomerate aims to achieve "tangible" results in humanoid robotics by the end of 2026.
  • Building on a late 2024 acquisition of a stake in Rainbow Robotics, the initiative highlights Samsung's broader push into physical artificial intelligence as increasingly viable for creating new global market opportunities.
