Boluda Shipping to Acquire Samskip, Expanding Europe’s Short-Sea Network
The combined network is expected to handle 750,000 TEUs a year and connect 28 countries, the companies said.
- The Spanish maritime group Boluda Shipping has agreed to acquire Samskip, the Netherlands-headquartered logistics company, creating Europe's "most comprehensive" short-sea container network connecting Northern Europe with the Iberian Peninsula, Canary Islands, and West Africa.
- Now in its 200th year of family ownership, Boluda is the world's largest marine towage operator with 850 tugs. Executive chairman Ignacio Boluda Ceballos stated there is "significant potential to strengthen connections" across Europe and West Africa.
- Following completion on January 1, the combined network will comprise 32 ships on 18 routes serving 28 countries. Annual throughput will reach 750,000 TEU, handling 35,000 containers.
- The two firms bring significant assets on shore, including 21 container terminals, five rail terminals, and more than 500 company-owned trucks for drayage. Combining sea and rail transport with road services helps reduce emissions.
- Subject to regulatory approval and fulfillment of closing conditions, both companies will remain focused on service quality until the transaction closes on January 1, 2027. The deal marks Boluda's expansion beyond its Valencia origins.
