CDC: Raw Oysters Linked to Salmonella Outbreak in 22 States Including Illinois

Sixty-four people across 22 states fell ill with Salmonella from raw oysters, with 20 hospitalizations reported, a higher rate than typical for such outbreaks, CDC said.

  • On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 64 people across 22 states have been sickened by the same Salmonella strain, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating with no recall announced.
  • State and local public health officials have interviewed 27 people about foods eaten during the week before illness, with about three-quarters reporting raw oyster consumption.
  • At least 20 people have been hospitalized, and the CDC wrote that people in this outbreak are hospitalized at a higher rate than expected compared with other Salmonella outbreaks linked to oysters.
  • The CDC advises cooking raw oysters by boiling, broiling, oil-frying, or baking at specified times and temperatures, warning that lemon or hot sauce will not kill germs.
  • Given Salmonella's underreporting rate, children under five, adults 65 and older, and immunocompromised individuals face higher risks, and only one in 30 infections is diagnosed.
