Quebec lowers electric vehicle sales targets for second time
The new target keeps gas-powered vehicle sales legal past 2035 as the province cites supply-chain and trade pressures on automakers.
On Thursday, Quebec lowered its 2035 zero-emission vehicle sales target from 100 per cent to 80 per cent, allowing a mix of fully electric and hybrid vehicles.
Environment Minister Pascale announced the change citing supply chain difficulties and international trade issues, calling it a "balanced approach" that "takes into account" the reality on the ground.
Quebec adjusted its 2026 goal to 26 per cent of new sales and extended its emission reduction target of 37.5 per cent below 1990 levels to 2035, as road transportation accounts for 33 per cent of total emissions.
Gas-Powered vehicle sales will remain legal in the province beyond the original 2035 cutoff, following The Coalition Avenir's previous indication last year that it would back away from a total ban.
The federal government eliminated its own EV mandate earlier this year for stricter emissions standards, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford had pressured Quebec and British Columbia to drop their targets, arguing they reduce competitiveness.
