London Mayor Sadiq Khan to Call for Ban on Social Media for Under-16s
Khan says tech firms must prove platforms are safe for children and will fund support for boys and young men across the capital.
On Tuesday, London Mayor Sadiq Khan backed a ban on social media for those under 16, declaring it the "only way to stem the harms we know are happening right now." He also announced a £1 million support package for young men.
The Government's consultation on children's online experiences closed last week, having floated measures such as a ban for under-16s, app curfews, and limits on addictive features. These findings will inform ministers' decisions under the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026.
Khan's £1 million package includes support for vulnerable pupils, a fathers' programme, and community football mentors. He warned online misogyny risks creating "a lost generation of young men," branding manosphere influencers as "snake oil salesmen."
Tech firms must prove their services are safe for children or face a ban, Khan insisted, adding that the "era of impunity is over." He challenged companies to explain how misogyny "spreads like wildfire" on their platforms.
Forty-Two child protection charities, including the Molly Rose Foundation, urged stronger enforcement of the Online Safety Act instead of blunt bans. They warned such measures "treat the symptoms, not the problem" and let platforms "off the hook.
