Michael Bambang Hartono, Djarum Co-Owner and Major BCA Shareholder, Dies at 86
Michael Bambang Hartono was Indonesia’s richest man with a net worth of $18.9 billion and helped build Djarum and Bank Central Asia into leading conglomerates.
Michael Bambang Hartono, co-owner of Djarum Group, died at a Singapore hospital on March 19, 2026, at 1.15 p.m., aged 86, Djarum Group confirmed.
The tycoon jointly owned Djarum Group with his brother Robert Budi Hartono and acquired a controlling stake in PT Bank Central Asia after the Asian financial crisis, amassing over $43.8 billion.
Djarum Group's operations include Djarum Black, Djarum Super and L.A. Lights, while PT Bank Central Asia reported revenue of 57.5 trillion rupiah last year and about 60,000 factory workers roll cigarettes.
