Saanich woman's great search leads to Black pioneer's resting place

Darleene Horricks, a Saanich resident, has been searching for her great-grandmother, Elizabeth Whims, since 2010, as her ancestors were part of the Black Pioneers who moved to Victoria from California.
On February 16, 2025, a ceremony was held to bless and honor the newly erected gravestone for Elizabeth Whims and her daughter Maria, marking their burial site accurately for the first time.
A cemetery plot plan from 1880 revealed that Whims was buried in lot 64, previously marked as 'unknown.'
The event coincided with Black History Month and included family members and Rev. Lon Towstego from the Anglican Church.
