Saanich Pair Canoes Out of Victoria Harbour on 3rd Epic Race to Alaska
Team Oaracle is back for its third R2AK run, and more than 60 teams will start the 1,200-kilometre final stage to Ketchikan.
Today, June 17, more than 60 teams depart on the 1,200-kilometre final stage of the R2AK to Ketchikan, Alaska, including Saanich paddlers Janice Mason and Ian Graeme of Team Oaracle.
The R2AK is a demanding, engine-free adventure race along the coast of North America; Mason and Graeme, who met at the event a decade ago, have completed three full R2AKs together.
Racing in their 18.5-foot Clipper tripping canoe, Mason, a former Olympic Games competitor, and Graeme qualified by completing the 65-kilometre proving ground from Port Townsend, Washington, to Victoria on June 14.
Team Oaracle expects to spend approximately three weeks on the course, with Graeme noting, "Every Race to Alaska is different," emphasizing safety and enjoyment over speed.
Competitors face a demanding route navigating strong currents, changing weather, and remote coastlines, where success depends on weather, tides, and the many decisions made on the water.
