Russia Fired over 2,800 Drones at Ukraine in August Amid War Tactic Change
Ukraine says jet-powered drones made up as much as two-thirds of Russia’s long-range attacks in mid-August, forcing Kyiv to develop new interceptors.
- Russia has pivoted to using jet-powered Shaheds in long-range attacks, with over 2,500 launched in August alone. Turbojet models including Geran-3s and Geran-4s are now replacing slower propeller-driven Geran-2 versions.
- Propeller-Driven Geran-2 drones reached speeds of around 115 mph, but newer jet models fly at 200 mph or higher and altitudes up to 30,000 feet, evading Ukrainian ground teams with machine guns and shoulder-launched missiles.
- On Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated Russia launched 800 jet-powered drones in four days. Drone expert Serhii Beskrestnov wrote, "Jet-powered Shaheds are being launched at Ukraine virtually straight from the factory."
- The faster weapons require upgraded air-defense assets, according to air force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat. He stated, "Understanding that Ukraine's defense forces are already highly effective at shooting down Shaheds, the enemy has increased its use of a more complex and faster weapon."
- Ukraine also faces the S8000 Banderol, a jet-powered hybrid traveling over 400 mph with a 114-kg warhead. Zelenskyy reported four companies have developed domestic interceptor technology to counter these advanced threats.
