- On Thursday, Tuareg rebels from the Azawad Liberation Front attacked a convoy of Russian Africa Corps mercenaries and Malian soldiers near the northern town of Anefis.
- Controlling Anefis is vital for the government to maintain a grip on the northern town of Kidal, which remains a stronghold of the Tuareg group.
- The convoy carried more than 200 Russian fighters and about 100 Malian soldiers; FLA spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane said troops engaged the reinforcement force, which is composed 90 percent of Russian mercenaries.
- Security sources confirmed fighting is ongoing after the convoy fell into an ambush, with the force described as having "dozens of vehicles with air cover" and Niger reportedly providing air support.
- Mali has faced insurgencies since 2012, and two back-to-back military coups in 2020 and 2021 alongside Africa Corps support have thus far failed to quell the unrest.
