Ukrainian Drones Hit Oil Refinery in Russia's Ryazan, Ukraine Says
Ukraine said the attack sparked a large fire at one of Russia’s biggest refineries, which has a capacity of 17 million metric tonnes a year.
On Friday, May 15, 2026, Ukrainian drones struck an oil refinery in Ryazan, Russia, igniting a large fire at the facility, which The General Staff of Ukraine confirmed.
Located about 120 miles southeast of Moscow, the Ryazan facility represents one of Russia's largest refineries with an annual capacity of around 17 million metric tonnes of crude oil.
Commander Robert Brovdi confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck 23 military targets and facilities overnight across Russian territory and occupied areas of Ukraine.
Beyond the refinery, Ukrainian forces also struck naval assets at the Kaspiysk base on the Caspian Sea, damaging a small missile boat and a minesweeper.
Social media footage captured a thick plume of smoke rising from the Ryazan site amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, documenting the strike's impact.
The refinery produces aviation kerosene used by enemy air forces. On the night of May 15, the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck the Ryazan Oil Refinery. Explosions rocked the refinery, and a large-scale fire broke out. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing a statement from the Unmanned Systems Forces and a statement from the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
