Russian officer killed in suspected assassination in Crimea, governor says
Russian authorities said the blast was a targeted attack and arrested a 32-year-old woman they accused of acting for Ukrainian intelligence.
- On Thursday, a bomb in Russian-occupied Sevastopol killed Robert Shageev, a former Ukrainian submarine commander who defected to Russia in 2014. Russian authorities arrested a woman, alleging she acted on instructions from Ukrainian intelligence agencies.
- Shageev defected to Russia in 2014 after Moscow annexed Crimea, abandoning command of the Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's only submarine at the time. He subsequently served in Russia's Black Sea Fleet, reportedly commanding the Stary Oskol submarine.
- Russian Telegram channels Mash and 112 reported the device was hidden in a trash bin on Stoletovsky Avenue and detonated remotely as Shageev walked by. Witnesses said the blast was powerful enough that some initially believed a drone had struck nearby.
- Ukrainian authorities have not commented on or claimed responsibility for the explosion. Sevastopol has been repeatedly targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
- Russian officials have blamed Ukraine for other assassinations, including two Russian generals in Moscow in April and December 2025. Mikhail Razvozhayev reported that five people died in a separate explosion while clearing Ukrainian bombs on Thursday.
