Runners in their 70s celebrate 50 years of running half marathon
Alan Musanti and Gary Kane, now in their 70s, plan to keep their 50-year streak alive as family members cheer them on.
The OUC Orlando Half Marathon celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, with Alan Musanti, 76, and Gary Kane, 78, preparing to extend their streak of completing every race since the inaugural event five decades ago.
Although Musanti and Kane were strangers when their journey began, marriages, kids, and jobs over the decades forged a lasting bond alongside their shared commitment to running the OUC Orlando Half Marathon every year.
As experts on the downtown course, Musanti and Kane offer practical advice; Kane recalls breaking into tears at the Chamber of Commerce building during his first finish line, while Musanti said, "Keep looking down if you're running on brick."
Reflecting on the 15th year, Musanti noted the streak's significance despite challenges like running through pouring rain at Church Street Station, saying, "I'm very proud of being able to hang in all that time."
Regarding the future of their streak, Kane joked that his wife said no to continuing beyond this year, while Musanti acknowledged the uncertainty of age but said, "I hope to keep going, but one never knows at this age.
