Rare 50p Coin Worth 160 Times Face Value – Not Atlantic Salmon or Kew Gardens
The Royal Mint says some Queen Elizabeth II coins are worth hundreds of times face value, including the Kew Gardens 50p and rare A to Z 10p pieces.
The Royal Mint released a list of rare coins from Queen Elizabeth II's reign, encouraging collectors to check their spare change for hidden treasures worth significantly more than face value.
Mark Loveridge, director of UK currency at the Royal Mint, said "the coinage of Queen Elizabeth II spanned 70 years" with special designs celebrating major historical events throughout her reign.
The Atlantic Salmon 50p is now recognized as the 'rarest' in circulation with 200,000 minted, overtaking the 2009 Kew Gardens 50p, which had 210,000 released into public hands.
Collectors are hunting Shield 50p coins from years 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016, 2018, and 2021—designated 'NIFC,' meaning these coins were not intended for general circulation.
While some rare specimens command 160 times their face value, condition and rarity determine pricing; proof versions from BUNC sets fetch higher prices than standard circulation coins.
