Royal Mail Misses Annual Delivery Targets but Hails Progress Amid £500m Plan
The company said storms, flu-related absences and a new delivery model are part of a plan to lift first-class performance to 85% within nine months.
Royal Mail reported missing annual delivery targets for another consecutive year on Saturday, with only 75.7% of first-class mail arriving on time over 12 months and 90.2% for second-class mail.
Last October, regulator Ofcom fined the company £21 million for previous failures, calling the delays 'unacceptable.' Recent performance suffered due to staff illness and storms Goretti and Chandra.
Chief Operating Officer Jamie Stephenson stated the company is now 'tracking in line with the plan' for a £500 million investment that includes a new delivery model eliminating second-class post on Saturdays.
Citizens Advice policy director Tom MacInnes criticized the performance as 'business as usual,' noting customers must wait another year for improvements. Communication Workers Union members awaited ballot results released on Friday.
Royal Mail aims to reach 90% for first-class and 95% for second-class delivery by May next year, having consistently delivered more than 80% of first-class mail on time in recent months.
