Route 9 in Spencer closed due to large police scene at shopping plaza

At about 7:40 p.m., Millbury police reported an officer was shot during a standoff at the Family Dollar in Spencer's Big Y Plaza, and the suspect was killed.
Police said they were called to the Big Y Plaza after reports of shots fired, and the CEMLEC SWAT Team and Massachusetts State Police negotiated with the armed suspect who barricaded himself inside.
Video from Tuesday evening showed a large police response at the Spencer Fair Shopping Center with multiple police cruisers, and an employee said they heard gunshots and saw someone with what they believed to be a gun.
MassDOT confirmed Route 9 between West Main Street and South Spencer Road was shut Tuesday evening, and authorities asked drivers and residents in Spencer to avoid the area as reopening time remains unclear.
