Ross Steelman learned to build golf clubs as a teen and it hasn't left him
Steelman says his hands-on club work helped him trust his equipment and improve his play as he leads the Korn Ferry Tour points race.
Ross Steelman won the Korn Ferry Tour points list this year, securing exemptions to The Players Championship and the U.S. Open for his professional breakthrough.
During high school, Steelman worked in a Missouri club repair shop during winter, developing skills to build, grind, and bend clubs that shaped his 'ultimate gear head' approach.
Steelman bought components on eBay and used ChatGPT to identify an iron shaft with a similar feel. "I cut it, glued it, put it in and it felt great," he said, citing improved approach statistics.
With his Korn Ferry Tour success confirmed, Steelman is headed Down Under for the Australian PGA and Australian Open to compete at the professional level.
The emergence of young talent like Steelman reflects golf's "silly season," where rising players increasingly influence competition formats including the Skins Game and the TGL indoor league.
