Schwartzman Shocks Field to Take Indy 500 Pole
Robert Shwartzman, a 25-year-old rookie, won pole position on May 18, 2025, at the Indianapolis 500 held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Shwartzman, who races for Italian newcomer Prema Racing, earned pole after Team Penske was disqualified for illegal car modifications.
Prema Racing, making its IndyCar debut, selected Shwartzman from its European Formula 2 team; he previously was Ferrari's reserve driver and part of its development program.
Shwartzman said, "Honestly it feels like I'm dreaming," and 2008 winner Scott Dixon remarked, "I didn't see that coming at all."
Robert Shwartzman secured pole position for the Indianapolis 500 as a rookie, the first to do so since 1983, while Prema Racing marked their debut by becoming the first new team to claim the pole since 1984, setting a historic tone for the race weekend.
