Ronald Campbell found guilty of murder for Nanaimo drive-by shooting
Justice Douglas Thompson ruled the Crown proved Campbell supplied the vehicle and gun, but not that he was the shooter in Yasin Khan’s killing.
On Wednesday, Justice Douglas Thompson found Ronald Joseph Campbell guilty in the 2021 killing of Yasin Khan at Rock City Centre, though he ruled the Crown failed to prove Campbell was the shooter.
The Crown alleged Campbell carried out a 'carefully-planned' hit in May 2021, yet Justice Thompson determined he only provided the vehicle and firearm used in the incident.
Police recovered a Glock handgun bearing Campbell's DNA and fingerprints, while an Apple iPhone linked to him contained location data tracing movements across multiple cities including Nanaimo.
Campbell faces an automatic life-in-prison sentence; arguments will commence to determine his parole eligibility, set at 25 years, which Justice Thompson is tasked with ruling on.
Defence counsel Jordan Watt and associate Bryan McPhail warned the court against relying on 'dangerous witnesses,' arguing their descriptions of the alleged shooter were inconsistent and unreliable years after the incident.
