Romania has been a member of the European Union for 18 years, but recent political events show that democracy in Romania is anything but self-evident. Gheorghe Piperea, Vice-Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group in the European Parliament, is sounding the alarm: "Democracy in Romania is in danger of being destroyed. But what is happening here could happen anywhere in Europe."
