Roddy Gayle Cleared to Play 5th Season of College Hoops for No. 16 Michigan, Coach Mike Boynton Says
A New York judge blocked NCAA challenges to Gayle’s eligibility, allowing the graduate guard to join Michigan after Summer League questions.
The New York Supreme Court issued an amended order on Thursday clearing Michigan guard Roddy Gayle for his fifth season, resolving eligibility conflicts with the NCAA stemming from his NBA Summer League participation.
Gayle sat out the Wolverines' first two exhibition games due to an oversight in the preliminary injunction that omitted his Summer League participation, prompting coach Mike Boynton to request an amendment.
The guard has played 146 career games with 72 starts, averaging 7.3 points per game and serving as March Roddy during the Wolverines' recent March Madness run alongside guards Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.
Gayle is expected to play for Michigan in the exhibition game on Sunday, October 25 against Houston at Van Andel Arena, as the court order explicitly protects the Wolverines from NCAA penalties.
The NCAA may still file an appeal in the coming weeks, while players nationwide challenge eligibility rules following implementation of the new five-year competition policy affecting college basketball.
