Roblox to require facial scans for children under 16 in Indonesia due to new social media rules
Roblox said 23 million Indonesian accounts identified as under 16 will be moved to age-based tiers with chat limits and facial age verification.
- On Thursday, Roblox announced that users under 16 in Indonesia must undergo facial scans to verify their age, complying with new government regulations banning children from digital platforms that could expose them to addiction and harm.
- The Indonesian government mandated these restrictions in March after classifying Roblox as high-risk, while seven other platforms committed to limiting access for children to prevent addiction and online scams.
- Roblox introduced tailored account tiers: Roblox Kids for ages 5 to 12 with no chat, and Roblox Select for ages 13 to 15 with limited chat to parents or approved contacts, while adding screen time limits for parents.
- The rollout automatically transitions 23 million accounts into restricted profiles; any user without a facial age estimate will be placed in a Roblox Kids account, according to Roblox Vice President Nicky Jackson Colaco.
- Addressing privacy concerns, the company stated it does not retain biometric data, with Colaco confirming that facial scan information is immediately deleted after the age estimation process.
