Roblox Rolls Out Mandatory Age Verification for Chat Features Globally
Roblox’s facial age verification assigns users to six age groups to restrict chat access and limit adult-child communication amid child safety lawsuits, with over 50% user opt-in in tested markets.
Starting January 7, 2026, Roblox Corporation requires age verification for users in regions where chat is available to access in-game chat.
The site-wide feature announced in November was trialed in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands, where Roblox Corporation says half of daily active users completed verification before global rollout.
To verify age, users must submit a video selfie via the Roblox app for AI estimation by Persona, then Roblox assigns users to six age groups that control chat access, with users 13 and older eligible for ID verification or appeals.
The platform's size — Roblox Corporation had 151 million daily users in 2025, players under 9 have chat disabled by default unless approved, and trial markets saw half complete verification.
Legal pressure is mounting as Roblox faces nearly 80 lawsuits and state attorneys general cases, while debate grows over shifting age verification responsibility to Apple and Google.
