San Francisco Police Officer Injured in Shootout with Robbery Suspect
Police recovered two firearms after 19 shots were fired in a chase that left an officer and a robbery suspect critically wounded.
On Sunday, May 31, 2026, a San Francisco Police Department officer and a robbery suspect were critically wounded during a shootout following a vehicle chase that ended in the Bayview District.
Officers initiated the pursuit at approximately 10:29 p.m. after spotting a robbery suspect's vehicle entering the city from the Bay Bridge, tracking it to 5th Street near Folsom Street.
When the vehicle became disabled near Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue, the driver opened fire, striking one officer "multiple times," prompting police to return fire and hit the passenger.
Police Chief Derrick Lew said at a Monday morning briefing that the wounded officer and passenger remain in critical condition, while the driver was arrested nearby with two guns.
Multiple agencies, including the District Attorney's Office, are investigating the incident, and a public town hall on the shooting will be held within 10 days, officials confirmed.
