Hundreds of jobs at risk as River Island takes axe to store base
UNITED KINGDOM, JUN 20 – River Island aims to cut rents by up to 75% for 71 stores and close 33 underperforming locations to address a 19% sales drop and £33.2 million loss in 2023.
On Friday , River Island announced plans to close 33 stores across the UK and Ireland, with hundreds of jobs at risk.
Chief Executive Ben Lewis cited the well-documented migration of shoppers from the high street to online, adding the sharp rise in the cost of doing business over the last few years.
The formal restructuring process, developed with PwC, includes employee consultations and renegotiating lease terms for 71 stores.
Hundreds of jobs are at risk, Cllr Ann McCoy said with local concerns highlighted.
Pending High Court approval, the Eagles Meadow store in Wrexham is scheduled to close before January 18, 2026, and a court hearing in August will decide plan approval.
