Poll suggests many Canadians worry about sports betting turning into problem gambling
Angus Reid says 13% of Canadians bet on sports in the past year, while 54% of bettors have used no responsible-gambling tools.
On Tuesday, May 19, 2026, an Angus Reid Institute poll revealed that 69% of Canadians worry problem gambling will rise as sports betting expands, while 13% reported placing a bet in the past year.
Among Canadians who placed a sports bet in the past year, 57% cited making money as their primary motivation, while 51% sought entertainment; participation is highest among younger men, rising to 37% for men aged 18–34.
While 46% of bettors reported using responsible gambling tools, 54% have used none; additionally, 28% of respondents worry someone they know has an addiction, with 81% of those concerned identifying the person as male.
Overall, 46% of Canadians view the growing presence of sports betting as a bad thing, compared to 8% who see it positively, with participation led by Ontario at 15% and lowest in Atlantic Canada at 8%.
The Angus Reid Institute conducted this online survey from May 7–11, 2026, among 1,803 Canadian adults; The Canadian Press noted that as an online survey, it cannot be assigned a traditional margin of error.
