‘Rise in deaths’ possible as OFFICIAL heat alert issued for Oxfordshire

OXFORDSHIRE, UK, AUG 9 – Temperatures expected to reach 32°C could increase health risks, especially for vulnerable groups, and cause higher demand for health and social care services, UK Health Security Agency said.

  • From 12pm on Monday, August 11, the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office issued a yellow heat health alert covering Oxfordshire until 6pm on Wednesday, August 13.
  • The Met Office forecast temperatures in Oxfordshire to hit 32°C on Tuesday, August 12, surpassing the heatwave threshold of at least three consecutive days above 25°C.
  • Those categorized as vulnerable include people over 65 or under five years old, with long-term health conditions including dementia or mental health problems, and those suffering from heatstroke are advised to call 999 as an emergency.
  • The UK Health Security Agency and Met Office said consequences may include a possible rise in deaths among those aged 65 and over or with health conditions and increased demand for health services.
  • Workforces in hospitals and care homes may be impacted as internal temperatures exceed recommended thresholds, and vulnerable people living alone could face overheated homes.
