Rick Steves’ Europe: Europe’s animal shows and experiences
Rick Steves joined a hands-on falconry demo where each participant got to fly a Harris hawk and watch it return for food rewards.
Travel writer Rick Steves participated in a hawk walk at the Ireland School of Falconry, located near Cong, north of Galway. A guide showed his tour group how to properly handle birds of prey.
Wandering through the enchanting grounds of Ashford Castle, the group spent about an hour observing the birds. The guide showcased a Harris hawk on his forearm throughout the session.
Each person received an opportunity to "fly" the bird, tossing and catching it on their arm. The guide tucked chicken meat in the padded glove so the hawk knew just where to return.
The hands-on experience proved both intimate and intense for participants. This direct interaction with the trained bird created a memorable connection during the outdoor activity.
Travelers seeking immersive activities increasingly value animal demonstrations like falconry. Such experiences offer memorable insights into local traditions and the specialized training required for handling birds of prey.
