TotalEnergies Breaks Ground for Middle East’s First LNG Bunkering Terminal
- TotalEnergies and OQEP broke ground on May 1, 2025, for the Marsa LNG plant at Sohar Port in northern Oman, marking the Middle East's first LNG bunkering hub.
- This event follows the companies’ Final Investment Decision a year earlier and responds to growing demand for cleaner marine fuels at Sohar, a fast-growing port.
- Marsa LNG, owned 80% by TotalEnergies and 20% by OQEP, will produce 1 million tons per year of low-carbon LNG, fully powered by a 300 MW solar farm to supply local bunkering in the Gulf.
- The plant’s carbon intensity will be under 3 kg CO2e/boe, roughly 90% less than average LNG plants, and a new bunkering vessel, Monte Shams, will supply LNG to various ships from 2028.
- This strategic project supports Oman Vision 2040’s sustainability goals, solidifies Oman's LNG hub status, and advances the shipping sector’s energy transition by reducing greenhouse gas emissions locally.
