One can only speculate about the reasons why the dramaturgy of the State Opera, or rather the Prague National Theatre, decided to perform the musical Sweeney Todd. There is certainly no shortage of opera audiences, including foreign ones, and there are plenty of specialized ensembles in the Czech Republic that would handle it better.

The State Opera opened the season with the famous Broadway musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The horror story about a vengeful barber was made famous by the film starring Johnny Depp. Now, the title role has been taken on by, among others, Adam Plachetka.
The National Theatre Opera has already presented more artistically useless titles than the musical Sweeney Todd. This one at least has unquestionable quality within the musical genre. But the attempt to master this genre looks rather awkward on the first scene.
