B.C. Guides Help Ski Touring App Map Safer Routes in Canadian Mountains

The app has drawn 4,000 users and more than 100 trip reports as developers map safer ski touring routes with local guides.

  • Launched in October 2025 by developers Esteban Sanchez, Gabrielle Toupin, and Daniel Leung, the Granite backcountry navigation app attracted 4,000 users by early March, who submitted more than 100 trip reports.
  • Seeking to fill a digital void, Sanchez developed Granite to address a lack of reputable navigation tools, as backcountry enthusiasts often relied on unreliable Strava tracks and AI-generated routes from ChatGPT.
  • Revelstoke ski guide Adam Zok, an ACMG-certified expert on the Columbia Mountains, collaborated with the team to map routes, saying Granite's satellite imagery and slope shading make it "worlds easier" for users to find safe passages.
  • The developers are collaborating with the BC Search and Rescue Association and AdventureSmart to integrate safety data, while planning to expand Granite this summer to include more than 400 hiking and mountaineering routes.
  • Aiming to establish Granite as a one-stop shop for backcountry planning, the team seeks to build a central hub for the community. "We're really creating the home of the backcountry community," Sanchez emphasized.
