Burnham Responds to BBC Question over Labour's Past Links to Brand
Andy Burnham and Ed Miliband praised Brand for his anti-establishment appeal despite earlier allegations and a later rape conviction, according to reporting.
On Thursday, Russell Brand was convicted of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court in London.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham and former leader Ed Miliband courted Brand to appeal to younger voters ahead of the 2015 general election, despite prior controversies including the 2008 Sachsgate scandal.
In 2014, Burnham defended Brand on social media, while Miliband interviewed the comedian in his £2 million penthouse to gain support despite the known controversies.
On Friday, Prime Minister Burnham described Brand's crimes as "horrific," stating he had "no idea" of the comedian's wrongdoing when he previously supported him.
Brand also received backing from figures on the Right, including billionaire Elon Musk, who wrote on X that he supported the comedian despite the allegations.
