Residents, daycare children forced from building at five-alarm fire in Saint-Michel
About 150 firefighters battled the blaze as crews evacuated residents and daycare children, and three people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
On Monday, a five-alarm fire broke out in a four-storey mixed-use building in Montreal's Saint-Michel neighbourhood, reported at 12:45 p.m. near Saint-Michel Boulevard and Cremazie Boulevard.
The four-storey structure houses commercial units on the ground floor, including the St-Michel Daycare, and 36 residential units, forcing 30 families and 70 children to evacuate.
About 150 firefighters responded, using aerial ladders to rescue residents trapped on balconies; Montreal Fire Department spokesperson Martin Guilbeault said, "We had to do a lot of rescues of those people."
Five people were injured, with three taken to hospital for smoke inhalation; none had life-threatening conditions. "All the children have been taken care of," said Guilbeault.
Operations continued into Monday evening, prompting road closures near the Metropolitan Expressway; authorities remain investigating the cause while advising commuters to avoid the area.
A major fire, which mobilized more than 150 firefighters and forced the rescue of several tenants trapped on the upper floors, ravaged a housing building at the intersection of Boulevards Crémazie and Saint-Michel in the middle of the day on Monday.
