68 Dead in High-Speed Train Collision, Spain’s 2nd Deadly Rail Crash This Year

A computer failure and control-centre error caused the collision, Spain’s deadliest train disaster in 13 years, officials said.

  • On Wednesday, a high-speed train crash killed at least 68 people and injured dozens near Madrid, as a Renfe train carrying 397 passengers struck a stationary Iryo train with 147 passengers, sending carriages down an embankment.
  • Transport Minister Puente said a computer failure followed by human error caused the disaster, with a 24-hour control centre in Madrid making an "inexplicable" decision to instruct trains to move without speed restrictions.
  • Passenger Salvador Arriza described the collision as "brutal" while trapped amongst seats, while 22-year-old Binier said "suitcases started flying and people were screaming" when the Iryo train flipped over.
  • Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated "the whole of Spain is grieving" during a site visit, while opposition leader Alberto Nunez Feijo demanded accountability, saying "Spain has the right to know what is happening with its infrastructure."
  • This tragedy marks Spain's deadliest train disaster in 13 years, following a January disaster that killed 46 people and prompting the Prime Minister to vow to "get to the bottom of this.
