Reports: University official killed by dislodged roof material at historic landmark
Strong winds reportedly dislodged roofing material at the historic site, killing Rogério Renato Mateucci and prompting an ongoing investigation, officials said.
On Friday, Oct. 16, Renato Mateucci died following an accident at Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, after being struck by dislodged roofing material during a walking tour.
Strong winds, reaching up to 22 miles per hour, caused the materials to dislodge, according to the Scottsdale Fire Department.
Mateucci had served as the senior official at The Pontifical Catholic University since 2022, holding a degree in Pedagogy and a doctorate from Fordham University.
The Pontifical Catholic University canceled classes at "the Curitiba, Londrina, and Toledo campuses" on Oct. 17 and Oct. 19, suspending administrative work.
An investigation remains ongoing regarding the "freak accident," and The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation stated the property remains closed to the public until further notice.
