Report: Weeknight games possible in 24-team CFP format
The expanded bracket would give automatic berths to Power 4 champions and the top Group of Six team while moving early games to weeknights.
The College Football Playoff is expected to expand to 24 teams starting after the 2027 season, with early-round games potentially scheduled for weeknights to avoid conflicts with late-season NFL matchups.
Under the proposed formula, the Power 4 conferences and the highest-ranked team from the Group of Six receive automatic berths. Notre Dame qualifies as an independent if ranked in the top 12.
Media-Rights negotiations with ESPN remain central to the expanded format, which eliminates traditional conference championship games. The CFP Selection Committee will distribute the remaining 18 at-large bids based on rankings.
The expanded bracket will stretch over five weeks, with second-round games hosted at higher-ranked team stadiums. Quarterfinal and semifinal games will rotate among the Rose, Fiesta, Cotton, Sugar, Peach, and Orange bowls.
Non-Power schools like the University of Hawaii, a Mountain West member, face concerns regarding the widening gap between programs. Analysts suggest these changes might negatively impact smaller institutions competing in the evolving landscape.
