Report: Red Sox SS Trevor Story Headed to IL
Nick Sogard is expected to fill the roster spot as Story seeks more medical opinions on whether surgery is needed.
On Saturday, the Boston Red Sox placed shortstop Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list with a sports hernia, retroactive to Friday, and recalled utility man Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester.
According to The Cleveland Clinic, a sports hernia is an injury to a tendon or muscle causing chronic pain in the abdomen or groin; Story has dealt with the condition since spring training.
Story batted.206 with 19 RBIs and three home runs through 41 games while committing six errors; his 57 OPS+ ranks second-worst among players with at least 170 plate appearances.
Interim manager Chad Tracy will evaluate whether to move second baseman Marcelo Mayer to shortstop, his natural position, while reserve infielder Andruw Monasterio and Sogard cover the position initially.
Despite an 18-26 record, the Red Sox remain three games out of an AL Wild Card spot with 118 games remaining, placing roster decisions under heightened pressure as the season progresses.
