Report: Israel Ends Zim Deal Review Telling Hapag-Lloyd to Restart Process
The ministry cited national security, maritime independence and ownership risks as it rejected the original structure and told the companies to file a fuller revised bid.
On Tuesday, Hapag-Lloyd urged Israeli authorities to review improved terms in its $4.2 billion bid for ZIM Integrated Shipping Services, following the formal rejection of the original acquisition proposal.
The Finance Ministry and Prime Minister's Office previously opposed the deal, citing concerns over operational independence and potential foreign influence from Hapag-Lloyd's Qatar and Saudi Arabian shareholders.
Submitted last Thursday, the revised proposal adds a weekly direct route to East Asia and strengthens state protections under the "Golden Share" provision, addressing security objections.
The Government Companies Authority officially terminated the review of the original structure on Tuesday night, but left the door open for Hapag-Lloyd and FIMI Opportunity Funds to submit a revised application by October 6.
With a February 2027 deadline approaching, Hapag-Lloyd must decide whether to restart the formal review process or pursue alternative strategies before the potential June 2027 extension.
The Megadeal will not be released for the time being – because of the participation of Qatar and Saudi Arabia in the German shipping company. Does the German shipping company have to restart the procedure?
