Google in Talks with SpaceX for Suncatcher Orbital Data Center Project
The talks come as SpaceX pitches orbital computing as a lower-cost option for AI and seeks investors for a $1.75 trillion IPO.
Google and SpaceX are in talks to launch orbital data centers in space, according to The Wall Street Journal, representing the latest effort by tech companies to create AI infrastructure beyond Earth.
Google's Project Suncatcher initiative explores space-based data centers, while Elon Musk announced a SpaceX merger in February aiming to launch 1 million orbital data satellites for AI computing.
SpaceX recently partnered with Anthropic to provide "multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute capacity," while Musk and Google CEO Sundar Pichai view orbital infrastructure as an eventual computing necessity.
The potential deal coincides with SpaceX preparing for an IPO later this year, positioning orbital data centers as the cost-effective future for AI compute infrastructure to investors.
Google is exploring options with other launch providers, as TechCrunch reports terrestrial facilities currently remain cheaper once construction and launch costs are factored in.
